Nancy Devine
For Laurel
from Grand Forks, ND
The cold, gray pavement never conceded to our stiletto heels.
I hadn’t known who Jim Morrison is
until on green carpet and conflicting bedspreads
we listened “Riders on the Storm”
and let our eyes match the rain sounds.
At Whitey’s the gin-soaked limes are the model
for how I grade the rest of my drinks.
Sometimes, I just want to cross the bridge over
the Red River over and over.
Nancy Devine teaches high school English in Grand Forks, North Dakota, where she lives with
her husband Chuck and their two dogs. She co-directs the Red River Valley Writing Projec, a
local site of the National Writing Project. Check out her blog.
