Gail Eisenhart
Gap
I see her cognition tilt and tumble into an abyss
like a broken string of pearls as her mind strives
to connect strands of memory. Fractured thoughts,
an unfocused camera, visualize me as her mother—then
her sister. Like a child returning from school, she stops
to play with her food, recites names randomly.
Soon I become Rachel, sliding down a muddy terrace.
She scolds, sure I’ll stain my starched white pinafore.
As she stumbles over scrambled facts I run along side her,
steer toward recognition and struggle to follow her
on this twisted bridge, balanced between sanity
and darkness, never quite reaching solid ground.
Gail Eisenhart views the world as a fascinating kaleidoscope of people, critters, growing
things and emotions. She likes to maneuver the mundane and hold it to the light of
imagination. By twisting and turning life’s chards, she hopes to pen symmetrical word
designs with her poems. She has retired (twice), but continues to work part time as
Administrative Assistant to the Director of the Belleville Illinois Public Library. Being
surrounded by people and books keeps her brain alive and provides ongoing inspiration to
write.
