Karen Head

14th Way

You depart Copenhagen in the morning,
are plunged into darkness on the
Øresundsbron,
seabirds dive by the train window as you ascend.

When you reach Karlskrona
3:00 pm is an odd kind of night—
St. Lucia’s candles illuminate the day.

At 6:00 am there is nothing like twilight,
just a yellow-eyed blackbird on the sill,
feathers fraying in the snowy wind.

Karen Head is the author of Sassing (WordTech Press, 2009), My Paris Year (All Nations Press,
2009) and
Shadow
Boxes (All Nations Press, 2003). Her poetry has appeared in a number of
journals
and anthologies. As a scholar of contemporary American poetry, she has begun to

explore the connections between traditional text-based poetry and digitally-
enhanced poetry,
an exploration that involves her in a number of projects being
conducted in the Wesley
Center for New Media at Georgia Tech. Her digital poetry
was featured at the E-Poetry 2007
festival in Paris.
