Chickenpinata
The History of Our Name
Chickenpinata? What's that?
A hundred years ago, when one of us was a
lowly undergraduate attending a Pac-10
school, there was a pink chicken pinata in a
Mexican bodega near campus that spoke
her name. She bought it, walked back to
her bus stop, and a man in a white pick-up
truck pulled over and said, "Can I take your
picture for a contest?" She agreed, the man
photographed her (though she never saw
the promised copy or knew if it won a
prize), and for the rest of her college
career, the pink chicken pinata hung above
her bed. At the same time, the Internet
was in its infancy, and "chickenpinata"
became the name she used for all her IDs.
Plus, admit it. It's a really cool name.
Who We Are
We are two women poets (one academic,
one outside-the-academy) who love and
write poetry, but we are irked by some of
the unintelligible, joyless writing we've seen
in so-called "premier" literary journals the
last few years.
We've started Chickenpinata as a labor of
love for all the poets whose work does
something innovative and interesting with
language, sound, and imagery, but whose
work is truly accessible so that people
beyond the academy could actually care
about it.
That's why we're looking for emerging
writers, people who want to share their
writing because they want to share their
own love of poetry a lot more than they
want a line for their vita. (Though, we admit
building a list of publications is important
too.)
We know you're out there, and we'd like to
feature your work.
